SAZAVA MONASTERY

Archaeological finds in the town Sázava date back the settlement until the Neolithic (Stone Age). However, the famous history of Sázava began in the 11th century, when the Prince Oldřich and the hermit Prokop founded the monastery here in 1032 – the four podest in the Czech territory - with the Benedictine order. Prokop became its first abbot. The monastery was important for its support of Slavonic liturgy (though the order of monks, as already mentioned, was the classic Benedictine).

The development of the monastery was interrupted in the time of Hussite wars in the 15th century. The high Gothic cathedral whose building started in this period, remained forever unfinished. The only finished parts are the tower and the arches of the main body columns. Very rare is the Gothic canonry hall with well preserved Gothic frescoes. The most interesting aminy them is the significant Madonna of Sazava, also known as Madonna punitive. It's one of the few, if not unique, where Virgin Mary – the mother, shakes her fist at the small Jesus.
